Dear Mom and Dad, Sat. [May 19, 1973]
Its early morning. The sunrise wasn't too spectacular. Pretty cloudy.
I heard there was snow in Williamsport, Pa. a week or so ago.
We are going to take a tour this morning of a really large oceanographic vessel thats into port at Castle Harbor by the town of St. George.
The island is really neat. Its almost small (19 sq. mi.) enough to get to know pretty quickly, but there are still many things that can not be seen too quickly. There are just as many places in the ocean. We went diving about 4 or 5 or more miles out at Nort Rock Thursday morning where there were some beautiful coral heads (brain coral, rose coral etc) and very pretty Fish. Yesterday afternoon we went to the south reefs. The whole island has been built up in the mouth of an extinct volcano with coral reefs all around the island at the edge of the volcano and the lagoon in between island

and reefs. Some of us are going to do so[me] more diving today.
We also did a plankton tow on our way back yesterday. I took a look at some of the plankton (under a microscope) when we got back. There were some pretty interesting organisms (copepods and larvae of crustaseans).
All this makes me want to be a marine biologist and oceanographer.
Tomorrow I think I'll go see a soccer match between the "best" team from England and the "best" team on the island.
Hope you're getting better, Dad. I had a little touch of a cold this past week. Nothing to put me out of commision though.
Bye for now.
Love,
Mike
P.S. Enjoying hearing from you.
