Early in April wrote
Gethsemane.
"Oh, garden fair, Gethsemane, oh beauteous spot:
The lofty trees o'er hanging mid the stilly dark,
If fitter place to meet with God, we know it not.
No wonder Jesus prayed in this secluded park.
But bitter ever mingles with the sweet of life,
The Master here was stricken with the struggle dire,
Twas here he sweat the drops of blood in awful strife,
And out of the mortal conflict rose his faith still higher.
And so must we like him the battle undertake.
When peace & joy meet sudden loss and pain.
For God forsook him not & will not us forsake.
But verve our hearts to follow on in Jesus' train.
