    … went ashore alone, found the Scotts had gone on furlough, had a chat with Miss Wythe of Nag.- Tramped about muddy streets, chatted with men from a U.S. transport- they had been sent to Russia to straighten out the R.R. system but can't go now, of course. They are awaiting orders. I bought a few little things for Mildred and returned to the ship at noon. A letter from Dr. Samwell, one from Auntie Glover. We sailed at 7 p.m. or after. Coaling all day, 28 barges at once. 3000 tons, just about. The Captain did his best to get over the bar outside the Yangtze but arrived too late, so we stayed all night, many miles out at sea. I went to church service. Mr. Cockhead preached a very good sermon. …
